Purpose

Private company growth is one of the strongest indicators of future business momentum. Identifying companies likely to grow — or recognizing those beginning to slow or decline — helps organizations uncover emerging opportunities, proactively manage risk, and make more informed strategic decisions.

The Crunchbase Growth Prediction Model (the “Model”) predicts whether a company is likely to experience future growth or decline by combining proprietary private company data, AI-powered Growth and News Insights, and real-time market signals. These predictions can be integrated into internal tools or workflows to help organizations identify emerging growth, monitor changes in company momentum, and respond earlier to potential risk.

What the Model Evaluates

Crunchbase’s Growth Prediction Model evaluates more than 90 features across five categories to generate reliable forecasts of growth or decline. The model evaluates signals across the following categories:

  1. Company Lifecycle Data

  2. News Insights

  3. Proprietary Crunchbase Engagement Data

  4. Market and Industry Context

  5. Historical Growth Patterns

Traditional growth models often rely on a relatively narrow set of historical or financial signals. In contrast, the Crunchbase Growth Prediction Model evaluates proprietary and market-driven signals together — including Crunchbase’s Growth and News Insights — creating a broader view of company momentum and enabling trusted predictions about whether a company is likely to grow or decline.

Each prediction includes a probability score and supporting contextual events, helping organizations understand not only which companies are likely to grow, but also the signals influencing that prediction.

What Powers the Model

The Growth Prediction Model is powered by Crunchbase's AI-generated Insights, which transform unstructured company news into structured signals that can be evaluated alongside proprietary private company data. Growth and News Insights provide the model with earlier visibility into the business events and market developments that often precede changes in company momentum.

Together, these Insights provide earlier visibility into changes in company momentum that traditional structured datasets alone may miss, strengthening the model's ability to forecast future growth trajectories.

Crunchbase continuously refines the Growth Prediction Model as new company activity emerges and its private company dataset expands. Ongoing improvements to data coverage, model evaluation, and customer feedback strengthen prediction quality over time.

Model Performance

The Growth Prediction Model evaluates the likelihood that a company will experience meaningful future growth or decline. The following precision and recall metrics demonstrate how effectively the model identifies changing company momentum.

 Precision*Recall^
Growing Company0.680.81

*Precision: Of the companies predicted to grow or decline, how many actually did.
^Recall: Of the companies that actually grew or declined, how many the model identified.

The model performs particularly well in identifying companies experiencing sustained growth, where signals are more consistently observable across the private market. This performance surfaces companies with the strongest indicators of future growth while minimizing unnecessary noise, giving organizations greater confidence in the companies identified by the model.

Predicting decline is inherently more challenging because indicators often emerge gradually or are not publicly disclosed until later stages of a company's lifecycle. Even so, the model identifies early signals of changing momentum before those shifts become more broadly observable.

While the underlying model evaluates both growth and decline, the Crunchbase software currently surfaces only positive Growth Predictions. The API provides access to both positive and negative prediction outcomes.

These results demonstrate the Growth Prediction Model's ability to identify meaningful changes in company trajectory before they become widely visible. Whether evaluating emerging investment opportunities, prioritizing high-growth accounts, monitoring changing market dynamics, or identifying early signs of business risk, Growth Predictions help organizations act earlier and make more informed strategic decisions.
