created_at before announced_on?

I'm working with the funding_rounds and trying to understand how much time elapses between funding round announcement (announced_on) and when crunchbase registers the event (created_at?). Strangely, created_at often precedes announced_on, often by hundreds of days. Does anyone know how to interpret that? Perhaps an exact definition of created_at would help.
